Chapter 3.  When Mark was the Government


Mark is competitive at sports and schoolwork, so it wasn’t a surprise that he’d also be competitive as the Government.  Setting the stage for the rest of the game, he imposed the Wealth Tax on us during his first turn.  Ann and I instinctively groaned, but understood it was a legitimate thing for the Government to do under the Progressive Monopoly rules. . . .

It didn’t take long for Ann and I to realize Mark’s goal (as Government) was to own all the properties, railroads, and utilities in order to drive us both into bankruptcy.  He managed to do that in short order, too, by employing Eminent Domain seizures of assets and escalating the rate at which his punitive taxes increased against those who had only modest sources of income. . . .

A normal game for our family lasts several hours, but when Mark was the Government, Ann and I were wiped out in less than forty-five minutes. . . .
